Have you ever worked on something (a project, or an idea) that was so outrageous, so unlikely, that you didn’t want anyone to find out, just in case it didn’t work out?
Are you in a season right now, where you are either doing what you think you should be doing, or contemplating doing it, yet it seems the odds are against you and you feel so alone on your mission?
Do you ever feel like you are being asked to be a pioneer? To go where no one has gone before, or at very least, where you have never gone before?
You are not alone.
You are in fantastic company actually.
What do the following people have in common?
- Martin Luther
- The Wise men who spoke to King Herod
- The Wright Brothers
- Noah
- Maybe… You?
I’ll tell you.
They were all told in one way or another, that what they were planning was impossible.
Martin Luther, reforming an entire religious system and way of life? Impossible! Have you ever heard of the Protestant Church? Heard of people called Baptists, Pentecostals, heard of a church called the Church or England, or maybe a community called the Amish?
All came from the actions of Martin Luther (and others… I know, I know, he wasn’t the only one fighting for change, but he was one man who was).
Imagine traveling for months following a star (of all things) and then being told that basically, you must have got it wrong. “Nothing good can come out of Nazareth!” (your final destination). Good time for a U-Turn and some home-time wouldn’t you say? OR you could keep traveling there anyway to find the greatest thing ever? That’s what the wise men did, and they found Jesus!
What about the Wright Brothers… lets put the conversations of others aside (the media, their families, their friends, other scientists etc.). Imagine the conversations they must have had with themselves!
“This is insanity! Impossible! What are we thinking? After so many failures, how will we ever get to fly!?”*
Caught a plane lately?
What about Noah. Imagine how many people must have mocked the man making a boat in the middle of a dessert, large enough for his family and two of every creature on earth!
How’s your heartbeat, and have you seen a bug around, or a cat or a dog? Humanity and animals survived a flood that covered the entire earth… and Noah is why!
Throughout history, people have done things that others have told them are impossible.
Yet, the impossible become reality!
As my wife and I look to move to America in under two months (!!!) read more here, I find myself sympathizing with Noah.
We still don’t have our visa, and no where near enough money to survive even a year, without a proper income.
One of the first questions people ask is, “how will you earn any money” (as we can’t draw a wage on a student visa). The answer I give is this, “We will trust God, that where He guides, He will provide.”
Time keeps ticking, and to many, especially to myself, I look like I’ve lost my marbles.
One person said to me, something along these lines the other day, “Not even an experienced missionary going to feed starving people could raise that kind of money in this kind of time frame, and your going to America, perceived to have no needs like a place like Africa!”
Thanks buddy! Like I didn’t have enough doubt going on between my own ears without hearing what was going on in between yours…
Luckily, I’m not planning on raising my own money. I know a God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, He can provide for me, and He already is!
I can hear the sound of rain.
As the weeks go by, the money is coming in. $100 here, $200 there. It’s not much, but a flood starts with a single rain drop.
Today I felt God ask me to say no to one church that was happy to have us come and share with them about our move to the States. I contacted them and said we couldn’t come, and within hours I had two churches ask if we would speak with them before we leave, so that they can bless us with their prayers and support! (Doing things God’s way is always the best way!)
History is made by men and women who do such things as build boats in desserts, and strap wings to themselves and try to defy gravity.
The ultimate HIS-STORY (pun intended) was made when Christ came and died and rose again and did what we thought was impossible, He took away our sins.
My prayer is that His Story, might become My Story as I die to myself and live the life, He has for me to live… Scary pioneering moments, and all.
My prayer for you is that you would follow in the footsteps of history makers, and trust in the ultimate author of history, Jesus Christ.
Start building your boat, strap on some wings, nail your beliefs to the wall, and let His-Story begin in you!
